In most theories of cartography, maps are scientific presentation of geographical reality ‘out there’. This scientific image of cartography is strengthened by the development of computer-assisted mapmaking technology in the modern world. Interestingly, in recent decades, we have witnessed the emergence of an alternative string of thought seeking to expose the subjective aspect, that is, the veils of ideology beneath maps. The most quintessential example would be Brian Harley’s Deconstructing the map, arguing that maps often articulate particular ‘visions’ ingrained in a wider political and social context, either through the mapmakers’ conscious or subconscious manipulation. In a similar vein, Edward Said posits that geographic knowledge is mostly culturally constructed. For example, Said comments that the general public’s cognition of the Occident and the Orient as two separate, distinct worlds was forged through the process of imperialist domination. Maps play the pivotal role in engendering narrations to reinforce such imaginative spatial knowledge. Who have Played Tricks on Maps? explores various interesting messages behind historical (and some contemporary) caricature maps. It is NOT an atlas (as the writer herself is not a cartographer) but a book that leads readers to de-construct and re-construct hidden messages behind maps.
